In 1180 A.D., Philip II, known as Philip Augustus, took the throne of France. Philip doubled the size of his kingdom through both marriage as well as through war. Philip Augustus also placed his friends in important positions within the government, and established a permanent French army, which further strengthened his own power and weakened that of the feudal lords.
