By the late 1200s A.D., the Mongols had conquered more territory than any other nation in history either prior to that time or since. The Mongol Empire stretched almost from sea to sea on the largest continent on Earth.
Because almost all of Asia was being ruled by a single government, there was great peace in the land. This peace led to prosperity and wealth. However, the Mongol Empire was short lived. The massive size made it difficult to rule. Gradually, local leaders became more powerful, while the Khans became less powerful. By 1300 A.D., the empire had divided into smaller independent states.
