Shah Abbas

In 1587, a descendant of Ismail known as Shah Abbas came to power in the Persian Empire. Abbas was a bitter enemy to the Ottoman Empire and wanted to destroy it. He sought out an alliance with anyone he felt could help him with this goal, including Christian nations. One such alliance set up by Abbas was with England.

Shah Abbas and his court.

Using the might of the British armies and navy, Abbas was able to put a great deal of pressure on the Ottoman Empire and help keep it in check.

In the process, he ended up handing control of much of the Persian Gulf over to the British.
