The Mogul Empire Declines
Early leaders of the Mogul Empire practiced religious tolerance. They strived to build unity and stability within their nation. Later leaders were not nearly as effective at ruling the empire. Leaders began to persecute the Hindus, and attempt to convert them to Islam, or to convert them to Sikhism, a new religion that blended many beliefs of the Muslims with those of the Hindus.
As a result, the Hindus began to rebel against their Mogul leaders. By the 1850s, the Moguls ruled nothing more than a very small territory around their capital. Then in 1858 they were completely overthrown, ending the Mogul Empire.
